Habitat for Humanity Fiji

Habitat for Humanity is a housing organisation with a mission to build strength, stability and self-resilience through shelter. Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 35 million people access safe and decent housing, along with access to water, sanitation and hygiene and livelihood training to build better lives.

In April 2020, Kadavu, Fiji, was struck by Tropical Cyclone Harold, destroying thousands of homes, leaving over 10,000 people requiring immediate assistance.  Without a safe home to go to, hundreds of families were living in emergency evacuation centres where social distancing was almost impossible.

Through the QBE Foundation’s local community grants program, we have supported five families who experienced damage to their homes because of Tropical Cyclone Harold. Funding was used to assess and repair five homes in Kadavu, including damaged or destroyed roofs, kitchens and toilet structures. QBE’s support for this cause aligns with UN SDG 13, climate action, providing emergency disaster relief following a severe weather event, UN SDG 1, reducing the exposure of and vulnerability of disadvantaged communities and UN SDG 11, ensuring access to adequate and safe housing.
