KidsCan New Zealand

KidsCan believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and disadvantage, so they work to provide the basics including shoes, raincoats and food programs to disadvantaged children so they can fully participate in learning and have an opportunity for a better future. By providing the basics, they remove the barriers to learning to give every child a decent start. During lockdown, KidsCan were named as essential service by the New Zealand Government.

With schools in lockdown, KidsCan had to rapidly adapt the way they provided their services. In 2020 KidsCan developed their 19for19 campaign, where they delivered food and essential item packs to families across the country, who were finding it hard to access support services during the lockdown. With QBE’s contribution, KidsCan were able to supply 100 hampers to vulnerable families, which helped feed families of four for up to two weeks. Each hamper contained long-life food items including pasta, pasta sauce, rice, canned food, tissues, handwash and muesli bars.

QBE will continue to support KidsCan’s shoes and socks program and food relief in 2021 to help reduce inequalities across New Zealand ensuring equal opportunities for all irrespective of economic status. By alleviating the burden caused by COVID-19, we are, supporting UN SDG 10 as well as reducing the number of New Zealanders experiencing poverty, aligning with UN SDG 1.
