The Outlook of Hong Kong’s SMEs Amid the Crisis

lei-yuQBE Asia’s Lei Yu, CEO for North Asia and Regional Head of Distribution, recently spoke with Insurance Asia News that 2020 has been a tough year for all businesses in Hong Kong, even more so for SMEs.

A survey QBE conducted with SMEs late last year showed the outlook of 2020 was exceptionally tough. Hong Kong’s GWP fell 9% in the second quarter of 2020 (according to official statistics) and the government’s most recent monthly survey of SMEs showed sentiment remained pessimistic. Given that environment, what we have seen is SMEs are really targeting cost containment and focusing their insurance spending on protection that is absolutely necessary and most relevant. SMEs that have better risk management and protection stand to benefit more from less claims and better premiums savings.

The outlook for 2021 will really depend on how soon and how fast the local economy will recover from Covid-19. If demand can slowly improve, SMEs will have a good chance and confidence to survive, which may help their investments in many areas, including spending on insurance and risk protection for 2021. Claims Stories Sharing – Giving the Best to an Injured Worker

At QBE Hong Kong, we are committed to provide support to our claimants and offer more than just a claim payment settlement. QBE Connect, our claim specialist team who supports the injured employees for their rehabilitation progress, work closely with the medical team and the employers to ensure their injured employees returning to work in the best possible time frame. This can be seen from a recent employee’s compensation claims lodged with QBE.

The injured worker Ms L sustained contusion injury to her head and upper limbs as a result of slipping on the floor of the workplace. Ms L complained of upper limb pain, dizziness, and headache after the accident. It was difficult for both Ms L and the employer to understand the persistence of dizziness and headaches resulting in continuous sick leave. QBE then arranged for Ms L to consult the panel specialist who recommended for further medical investigations and was found that Ms L also suffers from a brain tumour.

She was grateful for QBE’s thorough support leading to such expected medical results and our timely claims settlement. She has now recovered from her brain tumour and has returned to work. This is a testament of our commitment to add value and safeguard our customers’ wellbeing and readiness to return to workplace.

Our superstar agency that has a motor scheme with us requested our consideration in writing the old motorist segment of an age group beyond 75. In general, the insured who is aged beyond 75 is mandated to prove annually they have passed the medical tests not to say the additional premium loaded on the policy, which agitates our agency.

Listening to all these concerns from our agency, our Motor Head Underwriter assessed the risks promptly and agreed to give a greater leeway. Although our competitor has offered our agency less restrictive underwriting terms, they finally chose to work with us all fuelled by our willingness to listen, act, trust and take the risks together.
