QBE Hong Kong Updates
SME gloom about Hong Kong economy persists, while rethink on insurance is needed
As a keen supporter of SMEs, QBE Hong Kong has recently undertaken a market research study to understand this important segment. The study drew on an online survey of 410 Hong Kong SMEs in Q4 2020. The findings reveal SMEs’ business sentiments and concerns amid uncertainties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, point to startling risk exposure among some SMEs, and highlight the surge of cyber risks as digitalisation speeds up across all sectors.
We understand SMEs can be more vulnerable against fluctuating economic conditions, it is vital for SMEs to arm themselves with ample and proactive risk protection measures, especially as they become more reliant on doing business online.
SMEs will benefit from seeking consultation from insurance professionals who can help them understand their specific needs and explain the types of insurance coverage to fit their business instead of basing purely on the cost of insurance. Having the right insurance coverage will also help SMEs in the event of a claim.
Some key insights reveal as follows:
- The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the surge in digital usage and, consequently, given rise to cyber risks for which Hong Kong SMEs are underprepared.
- Business risks are also growing but the majority of SMEs lack suitable insurance coverage that can address their most pressing concerns.
- SMEs’ vulnerability to business risks is set against the growing pessimistic outlook among them for the Hong Kong economy.
