Frequently asked questions
QBE car insuranceYou may not need to pay a basic excess if the driver of your car did not cause or contribute to the incident claimed and you provide us with the full name and address of each responsible person, and if they were using a vehicle, each vehicle's registration number.
Yes, for an additional premium, you can add the following optional benefits:
- Hire Car – Extra (for up to 14 days)
- ‘No Excess’ Windscreen
- Choice of Repairer.
Simply add the optional benefits to your QBE Comprehensive Car Insurance policy when you get a quote online or ask us when you call.
You can pay an additional premium to add the Fire and theft cover option to your QBE Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance policy. Once added, this option can provide cover for loss of or damage to your car caused by fire, theft or attempted theft (limits apply).
Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is mandatory in Australia. It covers the cost of compensation if you or someone driving your car causes an accident injuring someone else. In NSW, QLD, SA and ACT you can choose your CTP insurer, in other states and territories it is part of a motor vehicle’s registration bill.
Comprehensive car insurance can cover repairs to your car for damage caused by things like collision, fire, theft and a weather event. It can also cover damage to someone else’s vehicle or property caused by the use of your car.
Choosing the right car insurance depends on your needs, and everyone’s needs differ. Understanding the difference between comprehensive car insurance and third party property damage car insurance is important.
Comprehensive car insurance can cover repairs to your car for damage caused by things like collision, fire, theft and a weather event. It can also cover damage to someone else’s vehicle or property caused by the use of your car.
Third party property damage car insurance differs to comprehensive car insurance as it covers your legal liability to pay compensation which arises from damage to someone else’s vehicle or property caused by the use of your car. It normally doesn't cover damage to your car as a result of an accident. It also doesn’t cover damage caused by weather events, fire or theft.
Under QBE’s Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance, you can choose to add the fire and theft cover option for an additional premium to include cover for loss of or damage to your car caused by fire, theft and attempted theft (limits apply).
It’s worth considering your car’s value and the level of cover you’d like.
No, CTP isn’t included in third party property damage car insurance.
Third party property damage car insurance provides cover for the damage caused by the use of your car to other people's vehicles or property. If you buy a third party property damage policy, you’ll still need to register your car, and if you live in NSW, QLD, SA or ACT, purchase separate CTP insurance, also known as a Green Slip in NSW.
Third party property damage car insurance, also known as third party, can cover damage caused to someone else’s vehicle or property from the use of your car. It normally doesn't cover damage to your car as a result of an accident. It also doesn’t cover damage caused by weather events, fire or theft.
Frequently asked questions
QBE home insuranceIf the claim is for loss or damage from the same event (for example, storm damage to your home and contents), you just pay the higher excess – either your buildings or contents basic excess. Other excesses may apply to your claim, read the PDS and your Certificate of Insurance for more information.
When working out how much to insure your home for (the buildings sum insured), the amount should cover the full cost to rebuild your home, including things like fences, carports and inground swimming pools. It should also include costs like demolition and debris removal. This isn’t the same as the real estate value, and it should not include the land value. A home building calculator can help you estimate a value. If you’re still unsure, please seek professional advice as building sum insured calculators can help estimate the cost, but are provided as a guide only.
You can use a contents calculator to estimate the replacement cost for your contents. Remember to include things like carpets, internal blinds, curtains, furniture, white goods and personal items.
Items of value, including jewellery and artworks, can be listed separately on your Certificate of Insurance, as part of the overall contents sum insured.
Estimating replacement costs can be tricky, so checking prices through online retailers can be helpful. If you’re still unsure, it’s a good idea to consult an insurance professional as calculators are generic and may not be accurate.
If you move, call 133 723 to update your QBE policy with details of your new home.
Please have the following handy:
- The date of your move
- Your new address
- Details about your new home, including its age and construction materials.
QBE Contents Insurance provides cover for loss of or damage to your belongings caused by events like fires, theft, floods and more. You can upgrade your policy to include cover for accidental damage for an additional premium.
If your body corporate isn’t required by law to insure carpets and blinds, then yes, they can be insured under contents insurance. QBE Contents Insurance can insure these items in case of damage due to an insurable event such as a fire, flood or other incident outlined in the QBE Contents Insurance PDS.
No. If you’d like to insure certain items that are designed to be used, worn or carried away from home – such as laptops, mobile phones, bicycles and other valuables – you can add the Portable Contents option for an additional premium. This provides cover for the items you have selected for accidental loss or damage anywhere in Australia and New Zealand, and includes cover for up to 90 consecutive days at a time anywhere else in the world.
Yes. Our QBE home insurance provides cover for loss or damage caused by a flood. For further details, refer to the relevant PDS for limits, exclusions and conditions that apply.
As a renter or strata-owner occupier, how much you insure contents for will depend on what it could cost to replace your belongings at today’s prices. This means you’ll need to spend some time thinking about all the items within your home that may need to be repaired or replaced in case of things like theft, fires or floods.
This often includes items such as televisions, furniture, white goods, laptops, mobile phones, clothing, jewellery and artwork. If you’re a strata-owner occupier, and your body corporate isn’t required by law to insure carpets and blinds, you may want to consider them too.
You can use a contents insurance calculator to help you estimate the replacement cost.
If you have either fully or partially furnished your rental property and you want to cover your contents that are for your tenants use, you can select landlord contents cover.
This can help to cover your contents in case of events such as malicious damage or theft by tenants, or paying guests.
Landlord contents cover can also be useful for strata-lot owners who want to cover fixtures within the property that the body corporate is not required by law to insure.
Read the QBE Landlord Insurance PDS for limits, exclusions and conditions that apply.
This all depends on your circumstances and how much cover you need. At QBE, we offer a range of landlord insurance choices:
- Buildings cover: Cover for your rental property and permanent fixtures
- Contents cover: Cover for the contents in your rental property that you have provided for your tenants to use as part of their tenancy. If you are a strata-lot owner, this could be useful if you want to cover fixtures within your strata property that the body corporate is not required by law to insure
- Buildings and contents cover: Cover for your rental property and your contents.
If we agree, you can also add the Rent Default by Tenant option for an additional premium.

Frequently asked questions
QBE Small Business InsuranceSmall business insurance is designed to help business owners manage a variety of risks. It typically bundles a variety of cover types together in one easy-to-manage policy, rather than buying each one separately, saving time and potentially cost. The most common type of cover is business liability, which can provide financial protection if a liability claim is made against your business. Other additional options may be available to cover things like your business buildings and contents, machinery and equipment, tools and stock or to cover you in case of business interruption, theft and more.
Most businesses face some type of risk every day, even small businesses, which is why insurance is so important. Also, there are some types of insurance that are compulsory for many small businesses. For example, it might be a legal requirement to have a certain level of business liability cover before you can start work. You may also need to consider other cover depending on your business needs, preferences and risk profile.
Every business is different, so the industry in which you operate and the products and services you provide will determine the insurance to consider for your small business. Most businesses need public liability cover which is why QBE’s Small Business Insurance automatically comes with business liability cover. It covers you for all sums you become legally liable to pay by way of compensation in respect of personal injury or property damage happening during the period of insurance and caused by an occurrence in connection with your business occupation.
If you’d like cover for other parts of your business, like your business buildings, tools and equipment, and stock, you can choose to add these as options when you get a quote.
Read the QBE Small Business Insurance Policy Wording to decide if the product is right for you.
Business liability is sometimes referred to as public liability and provides protection to businesses or individuals employed by the business in case they’re held legally responsible for causing bodily injury or property damage to third parties. The cost of this cover will depend on a number of factors, like the type of business and the risks involved. Every business is unique, so we ask questions to determine our pricing and if we’re able to offer the covers selected.
