Our process and interview tips

Step 1: Search 

It’s easy to find an opportunity that suits you. Search by:

  • Job Title or Keyword in the search box
  • Job Reference Number (if you have one)
  • Location
  • Job Type (i.e., full time, part time, casual, contract or job-share)
  • Job Category (i.e., Finance, Actuarial, claims etc)

Step 2: Learn more 

Once you’ve found an opportunity you’re interested in, be sure to read the full job description, including our requirements before moving forwards. You can also set up a job alert that will notify you when an opportunity that fits your search criteria is available.

Step 3: Apply 

On the job listing you're interested in, hit "Apply" to get started. The application process is quick and easy - it shouldn’t take any longer than 5 or 10 minutes and can be done from a mobile device.  If you are a referral candidate, please select Employee Referral from source type and add your referral’s email address.

Step 4: Check your confirmation 

If you don’t receive a confirmation of your application email, check your junk folders.
Step 5: Recruiter review process

We review applications individually, and usually within 2 weeks, you will hear back on the status of your application. Please bear with us if it takes longer than this as it may be that the relevant Recruiter or Hiring Manager is out of the office.

Step 6: Selection process

The selection process can take several weeks and will include interviews, and in some cases, online assessments (depending on the role).
Step 7: Offer

If you have been successful we will call you to let you know and will follow up with a contract or offer letter within a week. 
Step 8: Pre-boarding

A background check is a prerequisite for employment with QBE. It takes approximately two weeks to be completed, but processing time may vary.

There is a wealth of advice about how to approach interviews online, but we understand that this area can still be a potential minefield for some people, especially if you are a relative newcomer to the job market or someone who hasn’t applied or interviewed for a job for several years.

Here we have summarized what we think are the most important tips to help you prepare for an interview with QBE.

Prepare

Spend time familiarizing yourself with your own CV/resume, and be clear on what your strengths and development areas are as well as what motivates you both professionally and personally. What are your unique selling points? Why should QBE or any other employer hire you over someone else?

In many cases you can anticipate what sort of questions you might be asked by reviewing the requirements on the job posting/description. Your answers should highlight the skills and experience you have that are most important/relevant to the position. 

Also, have a list of your own questions to ask us. Come prepared to ask about the scope of the role and expectations and deliverables and how things operate. An interview should be a two way conversation and a lack of questions can often come across as a lack of interest.

Be on Time (That Means Early)

Be on time for the interview. On time means five to ten minutes early to ensure you avoid any queues at reception.

It’s always a good idea to plan your journey and your outfit in advance to avoid any last-minute problems that could make you more anxious than you would otherwise be. You want to be focused on performing at the interview rather than wasting energy on trying to find the office or your best shirt at the last minute.

Research the Company, and Show What You Know

Do your homework and research QBE and the insurance industry more generally, so you are ready to answer any questions that may come up. There is so much information on the internet now that there really is no excuse not to.

Even if you don’t get asked what you know about QBE or the insurance industry, it’s always best to demonstrate what you know by tying what you’ve learned about the company into your responses or your questions.

Develop a Connection with the Interviewer

In addition to indicating what you know about the company, you should also try to develop a connection with your interviewer(s). You can make this easier to achieve by ensuring you listen as much as you talk. Don’t forget to smile and maintain a healthy amount of eye contact.

Be conscious of your body language and how easy it is to make the wrong impression. You want the interviewer to be focused on your answers rather than reading into common body language pitfalls such as too much fidgeting or waving of hands (nervous), slouching (too relaxed), folded arms (overly serious or inflexible)

Rest assured, however, that we will be forgiving on this point as we want to get to know you as an individual and discover your true strengths and attributes.

Try to Stay Calm

During the job interview, try to relax and stay as calm as possible and be your true self. A certain amount of nerves and adrenalin on the day is no bad thing, but the calmer you are, the more confident you will be, and the easier it will be to give a good account of yourself. Preparation is really important. If you need to take a moment to think about your answer to any particular question, that’s totally fine, and is a much better option than stuttering and stumbling over your reply.

Follow-Up After the Interview

It’s always a good idea to follow up with a thank-you note reiterating your interest in the position. You can also use this as an opportunity to include any details you may have forgotten to mention during your interview.
