Lodging your claim

If one of your employees has become sick or been injured in the course of work, here’s what you should do:

  • Firstly, make sure your employee is safe and has seen the appropriate medical professional.
  • Next, complete the workplace injury register then call QBE or your broker.
  • Talk to your employee about whether they wish to make a claim. If they want to make a claim, they need to complete a claim form appropriate for their state, our workers compensation claims page for employees outlines the steps involved.
  • There are different reporting timeframes and forms that employers will need to use for each state. Find out what’s required state by state. Or, talk to your QBE Case Manager for guidance.
  • It’s an important part of the process that you stay in contact with your employee, so remember to give them a call and check to see how they’re doing overall.

This checklist can help you ensure you’re doing the right thing. Find out more from our expert Case Managers.

Suitable duties

When a worker has been injured and is unable to complete their normal duties, we can work with you and your employee, with the guidance of medical professionals, to find alternative suitable duties they can do while they’re recovering.

Helping a worker return to the workplace benefits their long-term recovery and supports the goal of reducing claims costs.

Complete the suitable duties worksheet today.

Did you know?

  • Most people can return to work before they have fully recovered
  • Returning to work improves recovery rates and reduces the risk of long-term disability and unemployment
  • Work has important psychological, social, emotional and physical benefits
  • You can claim wage reimbursements on accepted claims with a valid medical certificate.

What does Recovery at Work mean?

The nominated treating doctor will determine the safest way for them to return to work.

They may be able to do:

  • The same job with the same or different work hours
  • Meaningful suitable duties within their medical ability
  • A combination of these options

Getting the best outcome

Working with your employee to guide and support them after making a claim, goes a long way to:

  • Managing claims costs
  • Promoting faster recovery
  • Meeting your legal and safety obligations as an employer.

Staying in contact is important

  • Have the person’s direct manager call and check-in, especially if the employee isn’t at work
  • Ask how they are and what their doctor said
  • Let them know QBE is your insurer and we’ll be in touch.

Managing your claim

After receiving your employee’s claim we'll work with you, your employee and the doctor to determine liability. If the claim is accepted, we'll cover reasonable treatment expenses, as well as reimbursing you if the employee is entitled to wages (also known as weekly payments). We will also assist in helping them return to work.

Rights and responsibilities

Navigating the rights and responsibilities within Workers Compensation is different for each state.

It’s important you understand the notification responsibilities, safe keeping of required documents, along with how paying your employee will work.

Your QBE Case Manager will step you through all the requirements related to your situation and we’ll work with you to ensure the paperwork is complete.

Our expert case managers have highlighted some of the key points in our article, 'Understanding rights and responsibilities of workers compensation claims'.
