What is comprehensive motorcycle insurance?
Comprehensive motorcycle insurance is a popular choice among Australian bike riders, because it provides cover for a wide range of damage caused by things like fire, theft, natural disasters, and collisions with other vehicles or animals.
When you choose QBE Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance, you’ll automatically get our two-year replacement benefit if you have owned it from new. This means that if your bike is written off in its first two years, we'll replace it with a brand new one.

Here are some of the great reasons to choose QBE Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance.
Two year new motorcycle replacement
If your motorcycle is a total loss, was first registered less than two years before the incident, you acquired it new or as a demonstrator model and if it’s financed, the financier agrees with your motorcycle being replaced, we’ll replace it with a brand new one of the same make, model or series if available.
Motorcycle apparel cover
We know your helmet and riding gear isn’t cheap. We cover your apparel for damage as the result of a motorcycle accident for up to $4,000.
Agreed or Market Value
You can choose to insure your motorcycle for an agreed or market value. Don’t forget to include your accessories and modifications.

Motorcycle insurance FAQs
There’s no single average price for motorcycle insurance. Your insurance premium – also known as your motorcycle insurance price – will vary based on your individual circumstances. At QBE, we calculate your motorbike insurance price based on things like:
- The make, model and age of your bike
- Your age, riding experience and claims history
- Your location.
The best way to find out your motorcycle insurance cost is to get a quote online. It’s quick, easy, and tailored to your bike, your location, and your riding habits.

QBE Motorcycle Insurance is for bikes used privately or for limited business use that QBE allows – like commuting or the occasional work trip. It doesn’t cover motorbikes used for commercial purposes, such as:
- Food delivery
- Courier services
- Passenger transport for hire or reward
- Riding instruction
- Letting your bike out for hire.
If you’re unsure whether your usage is covered, we recommend reviewing your policy documents or contacting QBE directly.

While QBE doesn’t offer combined motorcycle and car insurance on one policy, you can still get both car and motorbike insurance with us under separate policies.
If you’re after car and motorcycle insurance, we recommend getting a quote for each vehicle type. This gives you the flexibility to tailor each policy to suit your specific needs.

Yes, QBE Motorcycle Insurance provides cover for learner riders and beginners.
An inexperienced rider excess may apply when the rider of the motorcycle is a learner or has held a motorcycle licence for less than three years at the time of the incident.
For more details on how excesses work and what’s covered, please refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
In Australia, all registered motorcycles must have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. CTP covers the cost of third-party compensation claims if you, or someone riding your bike injures someone in an accident. It doesn’t cover damage to your bike, other vehicles, or property. Depending on your state or territory, CTP may be included in your registration fee, while in others you may need to purchase it separately.
Although not compulsory, motorcycle insurance is recommended in addition to CTP insurance, as it provides cover for damage or loss to vehicles and property caused by events such as collisions, theft, fire, weather events or malicious damage.
QBE Motorcycle Insurance offers three flexible levels of cover:
- Comprehensive: This comprehensive motorbike insurance provides the highest level of cover for things like accidental damage to your motorcycle, theft, fire and legal liability, plus cover for your motorcycle gear, emergency travel costs, and a hire vehicle after a not-at-fault accident or theft.
- Third Party Fire & Theft: This level of cover protects your motorcycle if it’s stolen or damaged by fire, and includes legal liability and hire vehicle cover following theft.
- Third Party Only: This option offers legal liability cover for damage your motorcycle causes to other people’s property, without cover for your own bike.
Whether you’re wondering what comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers or comparing what third party motorcycle insurance covers, QBE offers flexible cover options to suit your needs, preferences and budget.

Yes, under QBE’s Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance, your protective riding gear – including your motorcycle helmet, riding jacket, riding pants, and riding boots – is covered for damage resulting from a motorcycle accident, for up to $4,000.
Sometimes referred to as motorcycle gear insurance, comprehensive cover is designed to help you recover the cost of essential safety apparel if it’s damaged in an insured event.
To understand how we assess and settle motorcycle apparel claims, please refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). It contains more details on limits, exclusions, and what’s required when making a claim.
QBE’s Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses resulting from an accident. In Australia, injury compensation – including medical costs, rehabilitation and lost income – is covered under Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, not through motorbike insurance.
To learn more about how CTP works across Australia, read our article: CTP explained: A state-by-state guide.
When choosing motorcycle insurance, it’s important to understand the difference between market value vs agreed value, as it can affect how much you’re paid if your bike is written off or stolen – and how much you pay for your premium.
- Agreed value
- A fixed amount that we agree on when you take out your policy. This amount stays the same during your period of cover and is clearly stated on your Certificate of Insurance (COI), giving you certainty about your payout.
- Market value
- The estimated value of your motorcycle in your local area immediately before an incident. It reflects market conditions, including factors like make, model, age, kilometres travelled, accessories, modifications fitted and general condition.
The choice between agreed vs market value often depends on your preference for certainty versus flexibility. Agreed value provides a fixed payout amount that’s set when you take out the policy, while market value reflects the bike’s current value at the time of a claim.
If your motorcycle has been stolen, contact the police immediately to report the stolen motorcycle. Make sure to take down all relevant details of what happened, including the time and location of the theft, and any information about other people involved, such as names and contact details of third parties or witnesses.
Once the theft has been reported to police, contact QBE by calling 133 723 (24/7) or submit your motorbike claim online. You’ll need to provide your policy number, the police report number, and any other relevant information about the theft and your motorcycle.
To learn more about how to protect your motorbike, check out our article: The state of motorcycle theft in Australia and how to prevent it.
First, make sure the accident scene is safe. Call 000 if anyone’s injured or there’s major damage. If your motorcycle can’t be ridden, arrange for it to be towed. If safe, take clear photos of the scene and any damage, and collect contact and insurance details from others involved, plus any witnesses. Report theft, vandalism, or incidents as required by law to the police.
When you’re ready to lodge your claim, have your QBE policy number and all relevant details on hand. You can submit your motorcycle insurance claim online or call QBE’s 24/7 claims team on 133 723. A dedicated claims officer will guide you through the process and help manage repairs through a QBE Accredited Motorcycle Repairer if needed.

Yes, QBE offers motorcycle replacement insurance as part of its Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance. If your motorcycle is declared a total loss and was first registered less than two years before the incident, acquired new or as a demonstrator model, and if it’s financed with the financier’s agreement, we’ll replace it with a brand-new motorcycle of the same make, model or series (if available). This benefit is designed to help you get back on the road quickly with minimal disruption.
For more details, including eligibility and conditions, please refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).
Yes, someone else may be covered under your QBE Motorcycle Insurance policy if they ride your bike – as long as they have your permission and hold a valid rider licence. Your cover includes legal liability for damage caused to someone else’s property while your bike is being used, even if it’s not you riding it.
Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more details about what is and isn’t covered when someone else rides your bike.
There are a few ways you may be able to lower your motorcycle insurance premium:
- Maintain a good claims history: This may help reduce your premium with QBE as it reflects a lower risk profile.
- Choose a higher excess: Opting for a higher excess means you’ll pay more out of pocket if you make a claim, but it may reduce your premium upfront.
- Motorcycle club discount: If you tell us you’re a member of a motorcycle club approved by QBE when you get a quote. Discount only available for Comprehensive cover.
For more information on what influences your premium and what you can do to manage it, visit our Price Explained page.
Yes, accessories and modifications can be added to your comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy – but they must be listed individually to be covered.
If your bike includes non-standard accessories or after-market modifications, such as aftermarket exhaust, air intake, heated grips, panniers or saddle bags, you’ll need to tell QBE about each one when you take out or update your policy. If QBE agrees to cover them, they’ll be listed on your Policy Schedule and an additional premium may apply.
This is particularly important if you're looking for modified motorcycle insurance, where the value and uniqueness of your bike go beyond standard specifications.
Keep in mind: any accessory or modification not listed on your Policy Schedule won’t be covered. So, it’s a good idea to review your cover whenever you make changes to your bike.
For more details, you can read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
QBE’s Motorcycle Insurance is designed for road-registered bikes for everyday use on public roads, not for competitive or recreational track use. It doesn’t cover riding on a race track, speedway, or during any racing, time trial or rally events. This includes organised ride days and motorcycle track day events.
If you’re unsure whether your planned activity is covered, we recommend reviewing your policy documents or contacting QBE directly.
