Cyclone ratings explained

Cyclones that form in the Southern Hemisphere in the longitudinal region known as 90th meridian east, are categorised according to the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale.

This scale is used by Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) to determine five distinct categories of cyclones. While most people will probably know a category five cyclone is the most severe, less understood are the wind measurements that determine each category along with the impact on property.

Your location’s exposure to cyclonic winds can affect how the Building Code of Australia (BCA) is applied by government authorities to the construction and maintenance of buildings in your local area.
